Issue 1 - What is The Collective and Why It Exists

The Questions That Changed Everything

At 16, I faced two questions that would define the path of my life:

“Who am I?”

“Why am I here?”

As a kid, I struggled with what I now know was anxiety. It rolled into seasons of mild depression and an unhealthy self-image. Despite achievements, I wrestled with comparison, an inferiority complex, and a hidden cynicism about the world.

I grew up hearing about the gospel, but the power of Christ felt distant because I hadn’t yet encountered the answer to these life-defining questions.

At that age, discouraged, scared, and feeling hopeless, I remember thinking:

“I don’t think I can do this… this being life.”

Then something shifted. I received a deep and settling sense that what I was going through would one day help many other people. It was one of those unmistakable moments where God spoke in a way that is hard to describe, but life-changing nonetheless.

Journeying With Brotherhood

The last five years of my life have brought the most growth, loss, and revelation. During this time, I’ve journeyed alongside other men—the core of The Collective.Like me, they’ve wrestled with self-doubt, low esteem, and identity questions. In upcoming podcast episodes, a few share how learning differences and unhealed pasts shaped them—and how God is reshaping their stories.

I’m not alone in doubting myself or being unaware of my value—and neither are you.

And while our focus is on Black men, families, supporters, and allies are invited to journey with us, to learn, reflect, and grow alongside the men in our community.

More Than Survival

I was born Black, male, sensitive, curious, compassionate, and oriented toward growth.

Over 20 years as a clinical guest expert, one of the most memorable questions I’ve ever been asked is:

“If you could go back, what would you tell your younger self?”

My answer:

You were born with purpose woven into your being. You were born to be you. You will impact others. And God is with you.

Beyond issues of race, masculinity, marriage, parenting, and finances, we all share three core human needs that God alone can meet: Safety. Significance. Strength. The absence of these needs is universal, but the context varies.

Why The Collective Exists

I’m an integrationist. My purpose sits at the intersections of faith, family, mental and relational health—helping others thrive.

We focus on the unique experiences of Black men because they matter. Understanding these differences helps us all become the best versions of ourselves.

The cultural landscape of Black masculinity is shifting. More men are seeking support for race-based trauma, generational wounds, and sexual abuse—struggles that affect families and communities.

Surviving is not the same as thriving.

How often do men who work hard to support their families get the chance to stop, rest, reflect, heal, and plan for growth? Too rarely. Healing has often been piecemeal.

The Vision

I dream of creating rest-filled, inspiring, and healing retreats—spaces where men can heal the past, strengthen relationships, and engage the future with hope.

Places like Jamaica, where the food, land, and surroundings create space to connect with oneself, with each other, and with God.

This is The Collective.

A space for reflection, restoration, and transformation.

A place for Black men to be seen, heard, and equipped.

And a place for families, supporters, and allies to join us on the journey toward thriving—not just surviving.
